SHAH ALAM: A deputy assistant director of the Immigration Department stationed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court today to four counts of accepting RM140,000 in bribes to facilitate the entry of 56 Bangladeshis.
Mastura Aziz, 49, entered her plea after the charges were read out before judge Datuk Mohd Nasir Nordin.
Mastura is alleged to have abused her position by allowing the group to enter Malaysia without complying with the department’s stipulated procedures in exchange for bribes of RM12,500, RM47,500, RM52,500 and RM27,500 in cash from a foreign man.
The offences were allegedly committed at several locations, namely the Kota Warisan Bandar hawker centre, a petrol station on Persiaran Warisan Maju and a supermarket in Sepang on May 3, 7, 11 and 15 last year.
She was charged under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable under Section 24, which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
The commission’s deputy public prosecutor, Irna Julieza Maaras, sought bail of RM50,000 with one surety for all four charges.
Lawyer Datuk Geethan Ram Vincent argued for a lower sum on the grounds that his client had fully cooperated with investigators and posed no flight risk.
Nasir granted bail at RM20,000 with one surety and ordered Mastura to report to the commission once a month. The court set Feb 25 for mention.
